Hand turned from a solid piece of Ancient Kauri, this wand was fashioned as directed by the wood itself. What makes this wand so very special is the age of the wood it's crafted from. The wood supplier has certified that the wood this wand is made of is AT LEAST 30,000 years old.
The wood is called Ancient Kauri and comes from New Zealand. It was ancient growth that fell into peat bogs. The peat inhibited decay and eventually, the land formed on top of them and time marched on.
Ancient Kauri has been carbon dated to be between 30,000 and 50,000 years old ...
the maximum limit of radio carbon dating, it is possible that this wood is even older. To put this in perspective, consider that Wooly Mammoths and Saber Tooth Tigers became extinct about 10,000 years ago.
When alive, every tree grew for at least 1,200 years.
Stop and think about that a second ...
Each tree built its life force for well over a thousand years. It did so in a time when the earth was a different place.
Yet it is NOT petrified wood. It's density is akin to cherry, with a texture similar to basswood. It is a tight grained wood. To understand this better, consider that typical cherry or walnut has 4-6 rings per inch with some up to 11 rings per inch. This wood has 50-60 rings per inch.
The grain (after a high polishing) appears almost like amber and this is because it has gone through a process similar to what turns amber resin into the gem. It's difficult to describe but when polished, the grain has almost a "living" glow to it. Some have described it thus, "the wood looks like very finely powdered gold floating in a pool of liquid". It is amazing to see how it appears to change as you look at it from different angles.
While Kauri trees still grow on earth, some dated at 1,200 years old, they are now protected by law. The great part about this wood is that its harvesting is an ecologically sound practice. No live trees are cut and the ground where the ancient trees are found (dug up) is redressed to its original contours after the wood is removed. Needless to say, there is a limited amount of this wood in the world.
As well as the multiple coats of Teak oil, this wand was waxed with a museum grade wax that was "sweetened" with real amber resin.
